Since Saturday, we are in the capital of Bolivia, La Paz (= Peace), the highest capital on earth. According to Wikipedia, we are at 3650 meters of altitude and thank God we had some medications and loads of Coca tea!! It's incredible how quickly you get tired and out of breath at this altitude! So it is all good training for us as we are due to walk 4 days in altitude to reach Macchu Picchu in about a week! Mimi is starting to stress about the hike, while Stephane looks forward to taking his plaster off once he reaches the top (.. and finally taking showers by himself!)
We also met a very nice couple of Belgians from Namur and together we went for the "any Belgian must see" sights: some ruins that inspired world-famous comic strip writer Herge and his album "Tintin et le temple du soleil". Well... the ruins were nowhere as prestigious as Herge had written about so all in all, we come out thinking Herge is simply an even greater author than we thought: he could invent great stories and make us dream in his albums like we wouldn't have if we had come here first!
The rest of the time, we visited La Paz: it's squares, museums, sites, markets (and its yuky "dried llama-embryos" - we will spare you that picture!). Today, we are going to Copacabana, the world's highest lake. Apparently, it's this Copacabana that gave its name to world-famous Brazilian beach, Copacabana. How so? you may discover in a future blog entry!!
